One of the best parts of summer in Midcoast Maine? Exploring the outdoors with our four-legged companions by our side. Whether your pup is a trailblazer or more of a shoreline stroller, there’s no shortage of dog-friendly adventures to enjoy.
Here are some of our favorite hikes and walks to explore with your furry friend this season:
Camden Hills State Park — Camden
With over 30 miles of pet-friendly trails, Camden Hills is a dog’s dream. Hike the Mount Battie Trail for panoramic views of Camden Harbor or opt for a more leisurely loop on the Nature Trail. Just be sure to keep pups leashed—wildlife sightings are common!
Dog perks: Shady trails, varied terrain, and lots of places to sniff.
Pro tip: Pack water and snacks—you’ll both want them.
The Belfast Rail Trail — Belfast
Flat, scenic, and easy on the paws, this 2.3-mile trail follows a historic rail line along the Passagassawakeag River. It’s a favorite for casual walks, jogs, and dog socializing. Stop at the dog-friendly Belfast Harborwalk for bonus views of the bay.
Dog perks: Plenty of sniffs and shade, benches for breaks, and dog waste stations.
Pro tip: Grab a treat at one of the pet-friendly cafés downtown afterward!
Ragged Mountain Preserve — Rockport
This is for the more adventurous duos. The Ragged Mountain Trail offers a moderate-to-challenging hike with rewarding views at the top. The loop is roughly 5 miles and gives both humans and dogs a great workout.
Dog perks: Streams to splash in and elevation gains to burn energy.
Pro tip: Leashes recommended—this trail can be steep and rocky in sections.
Fernald’s Neck Preserve — Lincolnville
A peaceful forest walk with lake views and quiet trails, this preserve is a hidden gem. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the Loop Trail offers a mellow 1.7-mile route perfect for warm summer days.
Dog perks: Soft forest floor, shaded paths, and occasional deer sightings.
Pro tip: Go early to beat the bugs—and the crowds.
Thomaston Town Forest — Thomaston
This quiet trail network is perfect for off-the-beaten-path exploring. Wide paths and gentle grades make it ideal for older dogs or those new to hiking. A great choice for peaceful evening walks.
Dog perks: Low traffic and wide-open space.
Pro tip: Don’t forget tick checks after your walk!
Bonus Beach Walk: Drift Inn Beach — St. George
While many beaches have restrictions during peak summer hours, Drift Inn Beach is one of the few where dogs are often welcome (especially early mornings or evenings). It’s a great place for sniffing seaweed, chasing waves, and watching the sunset.
Dog perks: Sand, surf, and sea smells galore.
Pro tip: Always double-check posted signs or town websites for seasonal rules.
No matter where you roam this summer, remember to bring the basics: leash, waste bags, water, and a towel for post-hike paws. And most of all—enjoy the simple joy of walking through the wilds of Maine with your best friend.
