Your Guide to Maine Fair Season

Maine Fair Season: Fried Dough, Ferris Wheels, and Farm Traditions

There’s a certain kind of magic that rolls into Maine with the late summer breeze: fair season.

From small-town charm to sprawling county-wide spectacles, Maine’s agricultural fairs are a beloved tradition that stretch back generations. They’re a celebration of rural roots, community pride, and everything that makes our state so special—plus, they’re just plain fun.

A Time-Honored Tradition

Maine’s fair season kicks off in July and runs through early October, peaking in August and September. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, there’s something timeless about stepping onto the fairgrounds: the smell of fried food in the air, the sound of laughter and livestock, the hum of the midway rides lighting up the evening sky.

These fairs aren’t just entertainment—they’re a reflection of Maine’s agricultural heritage. You’ll find 4-H exhibitions, ox-pulls, sheepdog trials, blue-ribbon pies, and local crafts proudly on display. For many families, this is the highlight of the year—a chance for kids to show off their hard work, for neighbors to catch up, and for everyone to share in the joy of community.

Must-Visit Maine Fairs

While every fair has its own unique flair, here are a few favorites worth adding to your summer and fall calendar:

1. Union Fair (Late August – Union, ME)
Home of the Maine Wild Blueberry Festival, this fair is a Midcoast gem. Enjoy agricultural exhibitions, harness racing, and a big helping of blueberry everything—from pie to pancakes.

2. Windsor Fair (Late August to Labor Day – Windsor, ME)
One of the largest in the state, Windsor Fair is a full-on agricultural showcase. It’s perfect for families, with tons of animal barns, garden displays, tractor pulls, and plenty of rides and games.

3. Common Ground Country Fair (Mid-September – Unity, ME)
Hosted by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), this fair is unlike any other. No midway rides or fried Oreos—just organic food, sustainable living workshops, craft vendors, and a quiet kind of beauty. It’s a favorite for many and feels like a celebration of Maine values.

4. Fryeburg Fair (Late September to Early October – Fryeburg, ME)
The crown jewel of Maine fairs. Sprawling and well-loved, Fryeburg Fair is a full week of agricultural competition, live music, horse shows, parades, and all the fried dough you can handle. It draws crowds from all over New England.

Why We Love Fair Season

There’s something grounding about Maine fairs. They remind us of what matters: local food, family farms, hard work, and community connection. For real estate folks like us, it’s also a time when neighborhoods feel closer, towns feel livelier, and newcomers get a glimpse of what small-town Maine life is really about.

So grab a lemonade, wander through the craft barns, cheer on a pig scramble, and stay for the fireworks. Fair season only comes once a year—but the memories tend to stick around.
